EMDR Therapy in Dallas, TX
A trauma treatment that helps your mind and body heal — without having to relive every detail through talk alone.
If you've tried talk therapy and still feel stuck — carrying the weight of a difficult memory, a hard birth experience, or anxiety that won't loosen its grip — EMDR may be able to help you move forward in a way that feels different.
What Is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a structured, evidence-based therapy originally developed to treat PTSD, and decades of research since have shown it's effective for a wide range of trauma and anxiety-related concerns.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies primarily on verbal processing, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds — while you briefly focus on a difficult memory. This process helps your brain "reprocess" the memory so it no longer carries the same emotional or physical intensity.
In plain terms: EMDR helps memories that feel "stuck" get unstuck. The event itself doesn't change, but the way your body and mind hold onto it often does.
Who EMDR Can Help
I use EMDR most often with women navigating:
-
Intense memories or triggers - relationship memories, medical, limiting beliefs about self
-
Birth trauma — difficult, frightening, or medically complicated birth experiences
-
Postpartum anxiety and PMADs — including intrusive thoughts and the fear/hypervigilance that often accompanies new motherhood
-
Past trauma — including experiences that talk therapy alone hasn't fully resolved
-
Anxiety — especially anxiety with a clear "root" experience underneath it
-
Life transitions — when an old wound is being triggered by a new season of life
How EMDR Can Benefit You
Clients often describe EMDR as helping them:
-
Think about a difficult memory without the same wave of panic, shame, or physical tension
-
Feel a shift not just in understanding why they feel a certain way, but in how it actually feels in their body
-
Move through trauma processing more efficiently than years of talk therapy alone
-
Regain a sense of safety and control after a frightening birth experience
-
Reduce the intrusive thoughts and hypervigilance common in postpartum anxiety
EMDR doesn't erase what happened to you. It changes how much power that memory holds over your day-to-day life.
What to Expect in Your First Session
You won't be asked to dive into your hardest memory on day one. Your first sessions focus on building trust, understanding your history, and making sure you feel resourced and safe before any reprocessing begins. You're always in control of the pace.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR may be a good fit if:
-
You've noticed certain memories or experiences still feel emotionally "loud," even years later
-
Talk therapy has helped you understand your struggles but hasn't fully shifted how they feel
-
You're navigating the aftermath of a difficult birth or postpartum experience
-
You want a structured, evidence-based approach to trauma
If you're unsure, that's okay too — we can talk through it together in a free consultation.
FAQ
Does EMDR require me to describe my trauma in detail? No. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to verbally narrate every detail of what happened. Much of the processing happens internally while you focus on the memory.
How many sessions does EMDR take? This varies by person and by what you're processing. Some clients notice shifts in just a few sessions; more complex or longstanding trauma may take longer. We'll build a plan specific to you.
Is EMDR evidence-based? Yes. EMDR is recognized as an effective trauma treatment by organizations including the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association.
Can EMDR be done virtually? Yes. EMDR can be adapted for virtual sessions using guided audio or visual bilateral stimulation, and I offer this for clients anywhere in Texas.
Do you specialize in EMDR for postpartum and birth trauma specifically? Yes — this is one of my primary areas of focus, alongside broader trauma and anxiety work.
